The first month of Art club is devoted to Op Art or art that tricks the eye. The first few projects for students are producing art that creates an optical illusion. I used the geometric shapes of triangles first and then circles and squares.
The first project requires:
a square piece of paper (11 x 11)
Black sharpie
Colored Pencils
Magic Markers
Ruler
Students can choose from a project with 12 triangles or 8 triangles. Using 8 triangles is a little easier.
For the 8 triangle project, start by using a ruler to draw a vertical line down the middle of the paper and then a horizontal line through the center of the paper. Then draw two diagonal lines, starting at the corners of the papers. Make sure the lines intersect in the middle of the paper at the same point. You will have 8 triangles.

Next, use the black Sharpie to draw "smiley" face half circles in every other triangle.
This is when the students will choose their two colors of Magic Marker. The colors can be analogous, complimentary, etc. or students can choose whichever color they wish. The colors should be contrasting though. Students will start with the first color coloring in every other section in the triangle. They will start in the middle and work their way out. If students need help remembering, they can put a dot in each section they will color before they start. Students should color in the direction of the curve.
Students will then complete the empty triangles with "sad faces." If students are able, they should make the ends of the lines of the smiley faces connect to the lines of the sad faces. They will then fill in every other space with a contrasting colored marker.
Next, choose two colored pencils that match the colored marker. Students will use this to shade the white area of the triangles. To create the 3-D effect, the colored pencil should be a little darker on the edges and then should fade out toward the middle.
For the 12 triangle project, do the same process except create 12 triangles. Create 4 squares, then, using diagonal lines across the entire paper, create 3 triangles in each square.
